Fenerbahce booked their place in the Champions League proper after beating Lyon 2-1 away from home and winning the playoff tie 3-2 on aggregate.
But instead of celebrating a hard-earned qualification, the final whistle was followed by scenes of chaos.
Players and coaching staff from both sides became involved in a huge confrontation, with almost 50 people reportedly caught up in the incident. At the centre of the controversy was former Marseille midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, whose celebrations in front of the Lyon supporters quickly turned the atmosphere toxic.

The first leg had finished 1-1, leaving everything to be decided in France.
Lyon had home advantage and knew that victory would send them into the Champions League group stage. Instead, their evening quickly turned into a nightmare.
Fenerbahce made the perfect start and scored twice before half-time. Lyon managed to pull one goal back after the break, giving the home supporters hope of a comeback.
However, they could not find the goal they needed.

That alone would have been enough to create a hostile atmosphere.
After Fenerbahce completed their victory, however, the midfielder appeared determined to take things even further.
Instead of simply celebrating with his teammates, Guendouzi moved towards the Lyon supporters and celebrated directly in front of them.
The reaction was immediate.
Lyon players and members of the coaching staff confronted him, and what began as a verbal exchange rapidly developed into a much larger confrontation.
The situation quickly spiralled out of control.
Players from both teams rushed towards the incident, while coaching staff and other members of the teams also became involved. What followed was a chaotic scene in which dozens of people were pushing, shouting and attempting to separate one another.
According to reports, close to 50 people were involved in the confrontation.
Guendouzi did little to calm things down. In front of the cameras, he reportedly shouted “Allez Marseille” while continuing to make provocative gestures towards the Lyon supporters.
The message was obvious.
Although he no longer plays for Marseille, Guendouzi clearly still has strong feelings about the rivalry.
And he was not the only former Marseille player involved.
Fenerbahce forward Mason Greenwood also found himself at the centre of the controversy.
Greenwood previously played for Marseille, and he was reportedly seen making gestures towards Lyon supporters during the confrontation.
That only added another layer to an already explosive situation.
From Lyon’s perspective, losing a crucial Champions League playoff was painful enough. Having two former Marseille players seemingly celebrate their defeat directly in front of their supporters made the situation even more difficult to accept.
The rivalry between Lyon and Marseille is one of those fixtures where emotions can become intense even without anything extra happening.
This time, there was plenty of extra fuel.
Perhaps the most bizarre moment came when Lyon goalkeeper coach Antonio Ferreira appeared to attempt to confront Guendouzi as the Fenerbahce player was leaving the pitch.
The situation did not go according to plan.
Ferreira’s attempted attack reportedly failed, after which several Fenerbahce players surrounded him and pushed him into a corner.
What followed was another chaotic exchange, with multiple people getting involved.
Eventually, the confrontation was brought under control, but the images from the stadium were difficult to ignore.
A Champions League qualification night that should have been remembered for Fenerbahce’s comeback and Lyon’s disappointment instead became dominated by scenes of confrontation.

Guendouzi’s connection with Marseille undoubtedly added context to his behaviour, but provoking supporters after a major European victory carries obvious risks.

But the big question now is whether the post-match chaos will bring disciplinary consequences.
UEFA will have plenty of footage to examine, and if the authorities decide that players or staff crossed the line, suspensions and other punishments could follow.
For now, Fenerbahce can celebrate their qualification.
But after a night like this, the football may not be the only thing UEFA will be talking about.
